Sultan Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged Nigerians to carefully scrutinise the promises of politicians before deciding who to support in the 2027 general elections.
He also cautioned political parties and their candidates against exploiting insecurity, poverty and other national challenges for political gain, saying campaigns should be centred on issues capable of promoting peace, unity and national development.
The Sultan spoke on Monday when he received the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Campaign Council, led by its Director-General, Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari Abubakar, at his palace in Sokoto.
He advised voters to listen carefully to campaign promises and assess what each candidate offers before casting their ballots.
According to him, Nigerians should make their choices based on what they believe will best serve their interests and those of the country.
The Sultan also urged political parties and candidates to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns, respect the decisions of voters and avoid actions or rhetoric capable of deepening divisions.
He said politicians should approach the 2027 elections in a manner that strengthens national cohesion and contributes to the country’s development.
On insecurity and poverty, the Sultan acknowledged that no government anywhere could completely eliminate such challenges but stressed that governments had a responsibility to reduce their impact on citizens.
He wished the APC campaign council success and prayed for continued peace, stability and good governance in Nigeria.
Yari seeks Sultan’s guidance
Earlier, the Director-General of the APC 2027 Campaign Council, Senator Abdul-Aziz Yari Abubakar, said the delegation visited the Sultan to seek his fatherly guidance, advice and prayers ahead of the elections.
Yari said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had demonstrated commitment to the development of northern Nigeria and the country even before becoming president, particularly through his support for leaders and development initiatives.
He said the APC-led Federal Government had achievements to present to Nigerians, particularly under Tinubu’s administration.
Yari also said the party remained committed to peace, unity and national cohesion, assuring the Sultan that the campaign council would conduct peaceful campaigns.
He appealed for the Sultan’s continued support, guidance and prayers as the country moves towards the 2027 elections.
The delegation included the Wazirin Sokoto, Sa’in Kilgori, and the governors of Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states.
Also present were former Katsina State Governor Aminu Bello Masari; former Sokoto State Governor and Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko; former Borno State Governor Bunu Sharriff; former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim; former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje; former Kebbi State Governor and Senator Adamu Aliero; and James Faleke.
The campaign council indicated that its next engagement would take it to Lagos in the South-West, where it is expected to meet the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu.
