Northern governors have declared full support for President Bola Tinubu‘s 2027 re-election bid, citing a political understanding between the North and South on power rotation and the need to honour the arrangement.
Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani announced the position on behalf of the northern governors on Saturday in Abuja during the commissioning of the national secretariat of Arewa for Asiwaju (A4A), a campaign coalition backing Tinubu’s second-term bid.
Sani said the governors remained committed to the President, arguing that the North should respect the power-sharing understanding reached between the two regions in 1999.
He recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari, who succeeded in securing two consecutive terms, had served for eight years, and maintained that the South should now be allowed to complete its own two-term tenure.
Although he acknowledged that the arrangement was not constitutionally binding, the governor insisted that political leaders should honour the agreement in the interest of fairness and mutual understanding.
“We don’t have any cause to now renege on that promise, even though it is not constitutional,” Sani said, adding that common sense demanded respect for the understanding.
He also urged APC members and supporters across the North to work collectively for Tinubu’s re-election and support the party’s candidates in governorship, National Assembly and state assembly elections.
Sani maintained that northern states remained firmly behind the President, adding that the region recognised his administration’s efforts and was prepared to support his second-term ambition.
The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, former Jigawa State Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar and other party leaders.
Chairman of the A4A Board of Trustees and former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, commended the Vice President for commissioning the secretariat and acknowledged the contributions of governors, lawmakers, former public office holders and party coordinators from the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Shekarau said the coalition was ready to begin its campaign activities, expressing confidence in its ability to mobilise supporters across the region.
He also stressed the importance of party leadership in driving the campaign and coordinating efforts towards electoral success.
The coalition said its activities would focus on mobilising northern voters behind Tinubu as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
